Gamlebyen is the oldest part of Fredrikstad. It was founded in 1567, named after the king, and built like a fortress to protect the people from Swedish attacks. Gamlebyen is surrounded by water and the only way in was over the bridge that could be raised and lowered. The town was also protected with cannons in all directions, most of them are still there. Gamlebyen is northern Europe's best preserved fortified town, and is still a very dynamic part of Fredrikstad. It is among the most popular places to visit for tourists in Norway
